The Story of Velcro

This children's science book tells the story of how Swiss engineer, Georges de Mestral, invented Velcro. The story is told through the eyes of both George and his dog. The book is written as a read aloud to young readers to support literacy for the grades 1 and 2 biomimicry units in the new science standards.

The story follows George as he took an annoying problem and turned it into a solution that makes life easier for all of us. Velcro is an early example of what we have come to call biomimicry – using an idea from nature to design solutions to human problems.

“The Story of Eco-Machines” is a real-life illustration of the application of the Next Generation Science Standard’s Science and Engineering Practices.  The story follows biologist, ecologist and farmer John Todd, as he is confronted by a number of ecological and human health problems. Like all scientists, Dr. Todd followed a design process that began with a question. Many years of investigation, collaboration, testing, and refinement ultimately led to the design of a living technology that became known as an Eco-Machine. 

Eco-Machines mimic the processes nature uses to clean water and are now used around the world to both clean water and produce food.  This living technology is an example of biomimicry, and ultimately has 

led to a new kind of design science, called ecological design, that is being used by scientists, engineers and architects around the world.

“The Story of Eco-Machines” is also a story of hope and inspiration. It shows us that ecological regeneration is possible and that we can change our systems to be more sustainable and less harmful to our planet. It also invites young people to learn about and consider new, exciting and meaningful careers.
